DHAKA, Aug 13, 2026 (BSS) - Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has picked Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the party's presidential candidate, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said today.

Tarique Rahman disclosed his decision at a meeting of the party's standing committee at the Bangladesh Secretariat here this afternoon.

"I am happy to announce that BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has become the President candidate from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)," Rizvi said.

He said the decision was made at a BNP standing committee meeting with party's Chairman Tarique Rahman in the chair.

Following the decision, Mirza Fakhrul resigned from the post of BNP Secretary General, Rizvi added.

When asked who will take the charge of the BNP secretary general, Rizvi said the BNP Chairman has been given the responsibility in this regard and he will decide on it.
 
He said, "Now we have only announced the nomination of the party's presidential candidate - Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir."
