DHAKA, Aug 13, 2026 (BSS) - Defence Adviser Brigadier General (retd) Dr AKM Shamsul Islam today stressed the need to raise awareness of international humanitarian law (IHL) at all levels of society to protect human life and dignity during armed conflicts.

He made the remarks when Head of Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Bangladesh Nicolas Paul Albin Fleury paid a courtesy call on him.

During the meeting, they discussed various aspects of IHL, including its importance and application in Bangladesh, training and public awareness, said a release issued by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate today.

The meeting placed particular emphasis on protecting civilians, women, children, the wounded and sick, medical personnel, humanitarian workers and journalists during armed conflicts.

They also discussed the importance of IHL in the context of Bangladesh's participation in UN peacekeeping operations.

The meeting stressed incorporating practical lessons, case studies, seminars and trainer-development programmes into military education and training, the release said.

The role of journalists and the media was also discussed.

The participants observed that responsible and fact-based reporting can help communicate the principles of IHL and humanitarian values to the public in simple and accessible ways.

They underscored the need to expand educational, media and public-engagement initiatives to raise awareness among young people and future generations.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of properly considering humanitarian and legal aspects in the use of modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, drones and cyber activities.

Both sides exchanged views on further strengthening cooperation in training, research, experience-sharing and public awareness on IHL, the ISPR added.
