GAZIPUR, Aug 15, 2026 (BSS) - The National University (NU) Academic Council 
today approved a policy to form subject-based pools of part-time teachers to 
address teacher shortages at affiliated colleges.

The decision was taken at the 103rd meeting of the Academic Council held at 
the university's main campus here, chaired by NU Vice-Chancellor (VC) 
Professor Dr A S M Amanullah.

The pools will comprise qualified and experienced retired teachers and 
experts in relevant subjects to help ensure regular and quality teaching for 
students, said a press release issued here this afternoon.

The meeting also approved the university's mission and vision, defining its 
specific goals and objectives for the first time in 34 years.

The council decided to give students who failed in one or more subjects in 
honours courses during the 2013-14 to 2017-18 academic sessions a special 
opportunity to sit for the examinations again.

It also approved the inclusion of freelancing courses-graphics design, video 
editing and web design-as well as culinary science (chef) and human resource 
management in the university's skill-based PGD programme.

The council approved a four-credit Applied ICT course for second-year 
students of degree (pass) and honours programmes and a Functional English 
course for first-year students.

The meeting discussed recognising certificates of three-year degree (pass) 
and one-year master's preliminary programmes as equivalent to four-year 
degree certificates. 

A high-level committee will contact the relevant government authorities for 
final approval.

The council also considered a proposal to allow students with CGPAs below 
2.25 to sit for improvement examinations on special consideration. It 
approved regulations for four-year LLB (Honours) programmes at affiliated 
colleges.

The VC said the university's academic decisions were aimed at securing 
students' future by equipping them with practical skills alongside academic 
education.

Among others, NU Pro-VC Prof Md Lutfar Rahman, Pro-VC Prof Dr Mohammad Ali 
Jinnah, Treasurer Prof Dr Md Nazmul Hossain, Dean (In-Charge) of the Centre 
for Postgraduate Studies, Training and Research Prof Dr Fakir Rafiqul Alam, 
Dean (In-Charge) of the School of Undergraduate Studies Prof Dr Md Ashek 
Kabir Chowdhury, Dean (In-Charge) of the Centre for Curriculum Development 
and Evaluation Dr HM Ruhul Quddus, Council Member-Secretary and Registrar 
Molla Mahfuz Al-Hossain, 43 members of the Academic Council, including 
principals of government and private colleges, and heads of departments and 
officials of the university concerned were present.
