DHAKA, Aug 13, 2026 (BSS) – Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to inaugurate National Fisheries Week-2026 on August 16 at the George Institute Mini Stadium in Achmita Union under Katiadi upazila of Kishoreganj district.

With the theme “A self-sufficient country in silver fish, Bangladesh first,” National Fisheries Week will be observed across the country from August 16 to 30.

Attending the event as the chief guest, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will formally inaugurate National Fisheries Week and hand over the National Fisheries Medals to selected individuals and organisations.

At the inaugural event, 14 individuals and organisations will be awarded the “National Fisheries Medal (Gold Medal)” in 13 categories in recognition of their outstanding contributions to fisheries production, research, technological innovation, extension services, administrative efficiency and entrepreneurship development.

Fisheries, Livestock and Agriculture Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid disclosed this at a press conference held at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock today to mark National Fisheries Week-2026.

He said the National Fisheries Medal is an important initiative to provide state recognition to individuals and organisations that have made outstanding contributions to the country’s fisheries sector.

The minister expressed hope that the initiative would further encourage those involved in the fisheries sector to increase innovation, investment and production.

He further said various programmes have been taken across all districts and upazilas, including the capital, on the occasion of National Fisheries Week. 

These include colourful rallies, discussions, seminars, fish fairs, honouring successful fish farmers, releasing fish fry, technology exhibitions, public awareness campaigns and various activities for conservation of fisheries resources. 

Through these programmes, public awareness will be raised about safe fish production, sustainable fisheries resource management, modern technology-based farming and the nutritional value of fish.

He said the fisheries sector has been making important contributions to Bangladesh’s food security, nutrition, employment, poverty alleviation and foreign exchange earnings. 

The government has been implementing various development programmes continuously to make the sector more modern, technology-based and export-oriented.

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, Secretary of the ministry Delwar Hossain, Department of Fisheries Director General Dr Md Khaled Kanak and senior officials of the ministry and the department were present at the press conference.
