Foundation stone of Laldia Container Terminal to be laid on Aug 30: Rabiul

DHAKA, August 13, 2026 (BSS) - Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Bridges and Railways Sheikh Rabiul Alam today said the foundation stone of the Laldia Container Terminal at Chattogram Port will be laid on August 30.

The terminal will be developed as a modern and environment friendly “green terminal” with the cooperation from Denmark, he said during a meeting with a delegation from Danish-based APM Terminals at the shipping ministry here this morning.

He said the latest technologies would be used at the Laldia Container Terminal. The terminal’s cranes would be operated remotely from offices, which would enhance operational efficiency and safety, he added. 

The minister also said active participation of women would be ensured in the project, creating new opportunities for inclusive employment in the port sector.

He said construction of the international-standard terminal would significantly increase the capacity of Chattogram Port. At the same time, the project would play an important role in creating employment, expanding trade and commerce and further strengthening the national economy, he said. 

During the meeting, the minister praised Denmark’s socio-economic development and technological advancement. He sought further cooperation from the Danish government and investors in developing and modernizing Bangladesh’s port infrastructure.

He said Bangladesh currently offers a favourable environment for foreign investment and has significant potential for investment in the port and shipping sectors. 

He assured that the government would provide maximum cooperation to foreign investors.

Members of the APM Terminals delegation thanked the government for providing opportunities for investment and cooperation in developing Bangladesh’s port and terminal infrastructure.

They also exchanged views on utilising modern technology, management expertise and international experience in the country’s port sector including at the Laldia Container Terminal.

Shipping Secretary Zakaria, Chairman of Chattogram Port Authority, senior officials of the ministry and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of APM Terminals were present at the meeting.
