CHATTOGRAM, Jan 22, 2026 (BSS) - Chittagong University (CU) has achieved a historic milestone in research, publishing a record 615 articles in internationally recognized Scopus-indexed journals in 2025.
This marks the highest number of research publications in a single year in the university’s history and underscores its growing global academic presence.
The achievement reflects the university administration’s research-friendly policies and the efforts of faculty and students, according to data from the CU Research and Higher Study Society (CURHS).
The 615 publications include research articles, review articles, conference proceedings, and resource announcements, with several papers appearing in top-tier journals such as The Lancet and Nature Communications, earning international recognition.
Statistics show that 30 CU teachers published more than three research papers each, while departments such as Chemistry, Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), Pharmacy, Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences emerged as the most research-active. Among the faculties, the Faculty of Biology led in both quantity and quality of research, particularly Q1-level publications.
CU researchers also collaborated extensively with international peers from the United States, India, Saudi Arabia and Australia. However, several prominent faculty members published papers in 2025 without mentioning CU affiliation, and these were not included in the statistics.
The university administration has introduced multiple initiatives to foster research. The Department of Research Management and Publications gives awards to encourage faculty research, and CU’s Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) regularly organizes workshops, seminars, and meetings related to research.
A new scholarship system for Masters, MPhil, and PhD students was introduced this year to create a research-focused environment, offering monthly stipends of Taka 10,000, Taka 20,000, and Taka 40,000 respectively.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin said, “We are prioritizing international-quality publications in research grants, recruitment, and promotion. A positive research culture is being developed through grants, awards, and recognition for outstanding research. Special training and workshops will also be arranged next year for faculties in arts, humanities, and law, which are currently behind in research.”
Established in 1966, Chittagong University is the largest in Bangladesh by area, spanning 2,300 acres in Fatehpur, Hathazari, Chittagong. The university has 9 faculties, 48 departments, 6 institutes, and 5 research centers. It currently enrolls 26,678 students, supported by 1,100 teachers and around 2,000 administrative staff.
This record-breaking performance in 2025 is seen as a significant step toward strengthening CU’s position on the global research stage and sets a promising path for its future academic journey.
