Dr Abrar calls for inclusive, science-driven, humanitarian learning

DHAKA, January 21, 2026 (BSS) - Education Advisor Professor Dr. Chowdhury 
Rafiqul Abrar has emphasized the importance of a quality, inclusive, science-
based and humanitarian education system. 

He made the remarks while addressing the 26th convocation of Independent 
University, Bangladesh (IUB) in Dhaka today.

Dr. Abrar said education should not only serve personal success but also 
strengthen democratic institutions, uphold ethical values and contribute to 
societal welfare.
 
He urged students to maintain honesty, integrity, social awareness and 
fulfill their civic responsibilities.

Referring to the July Mass Uprising, he noted the courage of private 
university students in fighting injustice and asserting citizens' rights as a 
notable chapter in Bangladesh's democratic history.

Highlighting the importance of science and research in tackling national and 
global challenges, he praised IUB's initiatives in space science, artificial 
intelligence, and renewable energy. 

The adviser also called for greater scholarships and financial support to 
ensure access to higher education for talented students.

On behalf of the President and university Chancellor, Dr. Abrar conferred 
degrees to undergraduate and postgraduate students, congratulating them and 
urging them to use their knowledge for public welfare and national 
development.

The event featured a convocation speech by renowned photographer and human 
rights activist Dr. Shahidul Alam. 

On the occasion, University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Dr. SMA Faiz 
attended as a special guest.
