BRUR, BRMC sign MoU for integrated research on Begum Rokeya

RANGPUR, Dec 9, 2025 (BSS) - A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been 
signed between Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) and Begum Rokeya 
Memorial Center (BRMC) at Pairaband village under Mithapukur upazila of the 
district.
 
The MoU was signed marking the Begum Rokeya Day today (Tuesday) aiming at 
promoting integrated research on Begum Rokeya's life philosophy, literature, 
social reform work and free thought. 
 
The university's Vice-chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Md Showkat Ali and 
Director General (DG) of Bangla Academy Prof Dr Mohammad Azam signed the MoU 
on behalf of their respective organisations at the syndicate meeting room of 
the BRUR administrative building. 
 
The MoU will also further strengthen cooperation between both institutions in 
publishing, organising joint seminars-symposia, using archives and databases, 
and producing research publications.

Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) Member Professor Dr Masuma 
Habib, VC of Gopalganj University of Science and Technology Prof Dr Hossain 
Uddin Shekhor, Head of the Department of Bangla of BRUR Prof Dr Shafiqur 
Rahman, Convener of the Rokeya Day 2025 Celebration Committee of BRUR Prof Dr 
Md Tajul Islam, Registrar Dr Md Harun-or Rashid, secretary of Bangla Academy 
Dr Md Selim Reza, among others, attended the event. 
 
With the signing of this MoU, BRMC is set to merge with BRUR with the aim of 
better preserving and promoting the legacy of the work of Begum Rokeya 
Shakhawat Hossain, the pioneer of women's renaissance in the subcontinent. 
 
Talking to BSS, the BRUR VC said that this merger will enable students, 
especially those from the departments of Bengali, History and Archaeology, to 
be directly associated with the memorial centre. 
 
"This initiative will create new opportunities for research, study and 
preservation of Rokeya's life and work, especially for the younger 
generation. The BRMC library will also be enriched with books," he added.
