DHAKA, Dec 1, 2025 (BSS) - A High Court (HC) bench today issued a rule on the government on a writ challenging the Provision of the Representation of the People Order (RPO) which made it mandatory for a candidate of an alliance for running in the election with own party election symbol.

A HC bench comprising Justice Fatema Nazib and Justice Fatema Anwar issued the rule asking the respondents to give reply within next 10 days.

Senior lawyer Ahsanul Karim moved the writ for the petitioner.

Md Mominul Amin, Secretary General of the National Democratic Movement (NDM), an alliance of some small political parties led by Boby Hajjaz filed the writ.

The petitioner prayed to the High Court to suspend the provision of the RPO of the Election Commission that prohibited the small parties of an election alliance to run in the election with the symbol of the main political party.

The government on November 3, 2025 published the ordinance of the RPO.

As per the amendment, a group of political parties can contest in the national general election as an alliance but they would have to contest in the election with their own symbols.
