26,709 people receive legal aid services at govt expenses

DHAKA, Nov 4, 2023 (BSS) - Legal aid services have been provided to 26,709 people through the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office since 2009.

This information was revealed in a report published on the website of the National Legal Aid Agency under the Law and Justice Department of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

According to the report, the number of cases provided legal aid through the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office is 3017. Out of this, 2215 have been settled. Beneficiaries in these cases are 26,709 people. 23,692 people received legal advice services.

The agency released data on legal services at government expense from 2009 to September 2023 through the National Legal Aid Agency (Legal Aid).

On April 28, Legal Aid Day was observed across the country. This year the theme of the day is: 'Fulfillment of Bangabandhu's dream of opening the door to free legal services'.

On the day, various programs were organized by the Department of Law and Judiciary and National Legal Aid Organization to celebrate 'National Legal Aid Day-2023'.

The day has been celebrated since 2016.

The Awami League-led government enacted the 'Legal Aid Provision Act-2000' to provide legal aid at government expense to the financially poor, incompetent litigants in the country.

After winning the elections held on December 29 in 2008 and forming the government, Awami League took various steps to enforce the law to ensure justice for the poor and deprived people.

In all the courts of the country, the Supreme Court, 'Legal Aid' has now been established as a place of trust for the poor and helpless litigants. Since 2009, the organization started working at the district level.

Later, its scope increased in various cases including Supreme Court, Labor Court.
