Govt allows import of 5cr more eggs

DHAKA, Oct 8, 2023 (BSS) - The government has given permission to five companies for importing five crore pieces of more eggs to bring stability in the market and also to enhance sufficient supply of this essential item in the kitchen market.

Talking to BSS, public relations officer of the Ministry of Commerce M Haider Ali said that the government has given permission to five companies and enterprises afresh to import one crore pieces of eggs by each company and thus totaling the number to five crore.

The companies which have received permission for importing eggs are - Union Venture Limited, JFJ Paradise Connection, Layek Enterprise and M/S Pinki Traders.

Earlier in two phases, the government had given permission for importing some 10 crore pieces of eggs. A big consignment of those eggs is likely to arrive in the country within this week, said the PRO.

Earlier in August, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock had fixed the price of per piece egg at Taka 12 considering the production cost of per piece egg at Taka 10.

But, the Ministry of Commerce had later decided to allow import of eggs following an observation by the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) that eggs are not being sold at such fixed price at the retail level.

Another senior official at the Ministry of Commerce said that the government would continue giving permission for importing eggs until it is ensured that such essential item is being sold at Taka 12.

Currently, the daily demand for eggs in the country is 4 crore.
