SC upholds life imprisonment for Titu in Gibran Tayebi murder trial

DHAKA, Aug 10, 2023 (BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today scrapped the review plea of Yasir Rahman Titu, sentenced to life imprisonment in the case lodged over the murder of Indian national Gibran Tayebi.

The apex court bench headed by chief justice Hasan Foez Siddique pronounced the judgment after holding hearing on criminal review petition filed in this regard.

According to the case documents, Tayebi, son of TA Khan, former police chief of Indian state of West Bengal, and principal representative of Central Maritime (BD) Limited was shot dead in Agrabad area in Chittagong city on June 9, 1999.

Tayebi's colleague James Roy filed a murder case with Double Mooring Police Station the next day.

Police filed charges-sheet against eight on November 22, 1999. The accused are- Yasir Rahman Titu, Md Osman Ali, Ali Akbar alias Didarul Alam, Zillur Rahman, Jahid Hossain, Md Siddique, Omar Ali alias Jahangir and Alamgir.

Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court on April 12, 2002, convicted and sentenced five to life imprisonment, acquitting Titu, Omar Ali and Alamgir. The state later appealed against the judgment and the High Court on March 28, 2007, sentenced Titu, Omar Ali, and Alamgir to life imprisonment.

Titu on October 10, 2011, surrendered before a Chattogram court and filed an appeal against his conviction on October 17. As the Appellate Division upheld the High Court judgment on August 1, 2012, Titu filed the plea seeking review of the apex court judgment.
