US climate envoy John Kerry to visit China from July 16 to 19: ministry

BEIJING, July 12, 2023 (BSS/AFP) - US climate envoy John Kerry will visit China from July 16 to 19, Beijing's Ministry of Ecology and Environment said Wednesday, as the world's two biggest polluters work to restart talks on climate change.

"As agreed by China and the United States, John Kerry, the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, will visit China from July 16 to 19," the ministry said in a statement.

The "two sides will have an in-depth exchange of views on cooperation in tackling climate change", the statement added.

The United States and China are the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases as well as some of the world's biggest investors in renewable energy.

But China last year said it was suspending climate talks in response to a visit by then-speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, the self-ruling democracy claimed by Beijing.

Kerry will follow Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who last month paid the highest-ranking US visit to Beijing in nearly five years, and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who visited China last week.
