DHAKA, Feb 19, 2023 (BSS)- A hearing was held today on the writ to stop the
screening of the Indian movie 'Faraaz', made over the terrorist attack at
Gulshan Holey Artisan Bakery on 2016, in Bangladeshi cinema halls and other
online platforms.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Khasruzzaman and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir
said this and fixed Monday morning to hear the writ petition after watching
the movie.
The writ issued a ruling asking why the defendants' failure to take necessary
steps on permanently bans the movie from being shown in Bangladeshi cinema
halls and broadcasted on Netflix, Amazon Primes and other online platforms
would not be invalid.
Besides, a request has been made to issue a rule seeking to know why the
necessary steps will not be taken to stop the screening of the cinema.
Petitioner Advocate Ahsanul Karim told BSS: "The way that they have portrayed
Abinta in the movie is derogatory and it's inconsistence with our culture.
Also, the movie degrades role of Bangladeshi law enforcement agencies during
the attack... Due to these reasons, the movie should not be screened on any
platform in Bangladesh."
Ruba Ahmed, mother of Abinta Kabir who was killed by militants in the Holey
Artisan attack, filed the writ on February 12.
In the writ petition, secretary of the Ministry of Information and
Broadcasting, secretary of the Ministry of Home, Bangladesh Telecommunication
Regulatory Authority (BTRC) and Inspector General of Police have been made
defendants (respondents).
Abinta Kabir, a student of Oxford College, Emory University in the USA, was
killed along with his friend Faraaz Ayaaz Hossain in the Holey Artisan attack
on July 1, 2016.
