Opposition lawmaker calls for taking measures to prevent road accident

 
DHAKA, Jan 23, 2023 (BSS) - Jatiya Party lawmaker Kazi Firoz Rashid today urged the government to bring back discipline in the transport sector as a large number of people are dying each year in the country due to road accident.

The opposition lawmaker said this while addressing on the point of order under the rules of procedure of the house held at the Jatiya Sangsad here.
 
"Most of the buses have no fitness certificates and the drivers also have no valid documents ...and that's why around 10,000 people died and 14,000 were injured last year due to reckless driving," he said.

Even indigenous vehicles like 'nasimon', 'karimon' are plying illegally on the highways which is posing risk for the passengers, he told the parliament.

As the country is progressing under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, it is high time that the government focuses on bringing down the number of deaths caused due to road accidents, said the lawmaker of Dhaka-6.

Citing a report on road accident in Faridpur, where a female student named Nadia of pharmacy department died, the lawmaker said Nadia, the eldest children of a family, was killed due to reckless driving. He said, adding "Such tragic death every year is breaking the dreams of hundreds of families."

The lawmaker called upon the government to give responsibility to the concerned deputy commissioners to oversee the fitness of the vehicles. Otherwise the death toll due to the road accident would not decrease, he added.
