CTTC arrests fugitive death-penalty convict: Asaduzzaman 

DHAKA, March 2, 2022 (BSS) - The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) has arrested a fugitive person who has been awarded death penalty for his attempt to assassination of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2000.

The arrested convict was identified as Md Azizul Haque Rana alias Shahnewaz alias Ruman, Chief of CTTC Md Asaduzzaman said. 

The CTTC also recovered huge Jihadi books, two mobile phones, pen drives and computer hard disks from his possession, Asaduzzaman, also an Additional Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), added.

Addressing a press briefing at DMP Media Center, Asaduzzaman said the CTTC, acting on a tip-off, conducted a special drive on Tuesday in Khilkhet Bazar Mosque area under Khilkhet police station and arrested Azizul.

He said arrested Azizul was charged with internationally notorious militant and terrorist Mufti Hannan who set up two high powered bombs (40-kg & 76 kg) near a scheduled rally of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Sheikh Lutfar Rahman Government College ground under Kotalipara Upazila on July 21 in 2000.

"After recovering the bombs, Azizul Haque alias Shahnewaz fled away from Kotalipara and came to Dhaka," the CTTC chief added.

Arrested Azizul joined the Harkat-Ul-Juhad Al-Islami (HUJI) and obtained training with other students of Mufti Izhar at Lalkhan Madrasa in Chattogram, he said adding that he also received training in various subjects including bomb making and self-defense technique. 

DMP Joint Commissioner Md Elias Sharif; Deputy Commissioners Md. Shahidullah, Md Mahfuzul Islam, Md Faruk Hossain, Md Tareq Bin Rashid and other officials concerned were present.
