Six BNP activists arrested for arson attacks  

DHAKA, Aug 8, 2023 (BSS) - The Dhaka district police has arrested six BNP activists on charges of arson attacks, vandalism on motor vehicles and buses and cocktails explosion on Dhaka-Aricha Highway during BNP’s countrywide sit-in programme on July 29.

Addressing a press briefing at the conference room of SP Dhaka Md Asaduzzaman said police arrested six BNP and its front organization activists, who confessed their involvement in arson attacks and vandalism during BNP’s sit in programme on Dhaka-Aricha highway on July 29.

“We have collected CCTV footages of the day and identified them who were involved in setting fire on motor vehicles and buses,” he said adding that they also damaged vehicles and poured patrol on the vehicles to set on fire.

After a case filed by a driver of a damaged bus ‘Bikash Paribahan’ Md Anwar Hossain with Ashulia Police Station on July 30, he instructed the Additional SPs Md Abdullahil Kafi and Mobashira Habib Khan to arrest the anarchists immediately. 

Later, police conducted special operations and arrested Shahidul Islam, 40, joint general secretary, Dhaka District Jubo Dal, Md Suruzzaman, 47, organizing secretary, Dhaka District Jubo Dal and Md Muminul Islam, 45, member, Dhaka District BNP.

The arrestees also confessed to the police their involvement in the arson attacks on passenger buses during the programme.

On their information, police also conducted various raids in Dhaka, Khulna, Gazipur, Manikganj and Rangpur districts and arrested other three anarchists.

The anarchists were identified as Apurba Chandra Das, 22, Member, Dhamrai Poura Chhatra Dal, Md Rajib Hossain, Member Dhamrai Thana Jubo Dal and Md Sujan, 34, Savar Thana Jubo Dal on August 7.

The accused persons initially confessed their involvement in the sabotage during their party’s sit in programme.
