CUMILLA, Jan 24, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman
Tarique Rahman is set to address three public meetings in Cumilla tomorrow
(January 25) as part of the party's nationwide campaign ahead of the 13th
National Parliamentary Elections.
This will be his first political visit to Cumilla in 24 years.
According to party sources, Tarique Rahman will speak at three separate
venues in the district-- Chauddagram at 5:30 pm, Fultali Ground in Sadar
Dakshin at 7:00 pm and Daudkandi Central Eidgah Ground at 7:30 pm.
Ahead of his arrival, a festive atmosphere has developed across Cumilla
district. Preparations for the rallies are in their final stages, with
extensive decorations, banners, festoons, and arches set up throughout the
area. Law enforcement agencies, including district police, are working to
ensure law and order.
On-site visits showed that the main stage at Dikbaji Field in Suyagazi, Sadar
Dakshin, built on a large paddy field, is nearly complete. Similar
preparations are underway at the rally venues in Chauddagram and Daudkandi.
Party leaders and activists were seen actively coordinating all activities at
the locations.
Party officials said Tarique Rahman will attend a major public meeting at the
historic Polo Ground in Chattogram earlier in the day.
On his return journey, he will participate in the three scheduled meetings in
Cumilla. Volunteer teams formed by Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal, and Swechchhasebak
Dal will be responsible for maintaining security and discipline during the
events.
Cumilla Metropolitan BNP General Secretary Yusuf Molla Tipu said that Tarique
Rahman last addressed a public meeting in Cumilla in 2002 at the Cumilla
Stadium. "His return after such a long time has created widespread enthusiasm
among grassroots leaders and activists," he said, adding that BNP candidates
for the upcoming election, including the Comilla-6 constituency, will be
introduced to the Party Chairman.
South District BNP President Zakaria Taher Sumon described the visit as a
significant milestone for BNP's electoral politics in Cumilla and the
southeastern region. More than lakh leaders and activists are expected to
attend the Sadar Dakshin rally and that preparations are nearly complete, he
said.
BNP-nominated candidate for Comilla-6 Monirul Haque Chowdhury said the news
of Tarique Rahman's visit has generated excitement across 11 districts of the
Cumilla region. "People from all walks of life are eager to hear his speak.
This rally is expected to be the largest procession in Cumilla's history," he
said.
Meanwhile, Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance)
Rashedul Haque Chowdhury said security measures have been intensified across
the district. "Law and order forces, including plainclothes personnel, will
be deployed at the rally venues and surrounding areas. Intelligence
surveillance has also been strengthened," he added.
