FARIDPUR, Aug 30, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife over a dowry demand in Sadar upazila here in 2015.

The convict, Rakib Bepari, 25, son of Lutfar Bepari of Durgapur village under Ishan Gopalpur Union of Faridpur Sadar, was present in the courtroom when the verdict was delivered.

District and Sessions Judge Shamima Parvin pronounced the verdict at noon.

According to prosecution, Rakib married Happy Begum, daughter of Humayun Sheikh of the same village, in January 2015.

After their marriage, Rakib demanded Taka 5 lakh as dowry from his wife and used to torture her. When her wife refused to give the money, he strangled Happy Begum to death on August 5, 2015 despite her being six months pregnant, according to the prosecution.

The following day, Happy's father Humayun Sheikh filed a case with Kotwali Police Station accusing five people.

After completing the investigation, investigating officer Md Belal Hossain submitted a charge- sheet before the court on July 8, 2017.

Following a lengthy hearing and examination of witness statements and other evidence, the court found Rakib guilty and handed down the verdict.

Faridpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Public Prosecutor Golam Rabbani Bhuiyan Ratan confirmed the verdict.
