One to die, another gets life imprisonment in Chandpur murder case

CHANDPUR, Aug 13, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to death and another to life imprisonment for the murder of gold trader Omar Sarker, 45, in Matlab South upazila of the district in 2022.

Additional District and Sessions Judge (Second) Md Kamal Hossain pronounced the verdict at noon.

The court sentenced Joy Biswas Anik, 21, to death and fined him Taka 10,000, with two years of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment. He was also sentenced to life imprisonment and three years of rigorous imprisonment under another section of the law.

The court sentenced another accused Hridoy Sutradhar, 21, to life imprisonment and fined him Taka 10,000, with two years of rigorous imprisonment in default.

Joy, son of Arjun Biswas of Subharia Sarkar Bari in Louhajong upazila of Munshiganj, was present in court when the verdict was delivered. Hridoy, son of Gopal Sutradhar of Sarpaar area in Narayanpur of Matlab South, is currently absconding after obtaining bail.

According to the case documents, Omar was returning home from his jewelry shop after midnight on February 21, 2022, when the two accused allegedly attacked him with sharp weapons and slit his throat.

Police subsequently recovered the body from the scene.

Omar's father filed a murder case against unidentified persons with Matlab South Police Station the next day.

During the investigation, police arrested Hridoy on February 23 and Joy on February 24 and produced them before the Chandpur court.

Then Sub-Inspector Md Habibur Rahman of Matlab South Police Station investigated the case and submitted a charge sheet to the court on May 10, 2022.
