Sub-postmaster gets 3 years jail for money embezzlement

CHATTOGRAM, Aug 3, 2026 (BSS)- A court has imposed a sentence of three years in prison on former Sub-postmaster Ehsanul Haque for embezzling Taka 15,83,900 from customers' savings and term deposits during his tenure at two sub-post offices in Boalkhali upazila of the district.

The verdict was delivered by Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Md. Mizanur Rahman on Monday. Advocate Rezaul Karim Rony, representing the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), informed BSS that the court found Ehsanul Haque guilty of embezzling Taka 15,83,900 from customers' savings and term deposits while serving at the two sub-post offices in Boalkhali upazila.

The court reached its decision after reviewing the testimonies of 14 out of 21 prosecution witnesses. As per the case details, while serving as a sub-postmaster at the Shakpura and Charndwip sub-post offices in Boalkhali, Ehsanul Haque misappropriated funds from customers by accepting savings and term deposits, recording them in the passbook, but failing to enter them in the office's main cash book and journal book.

He embezzled Taka 6 lakh 42 thousand at the Shakpura sub-post office and Taka 9 lakh 41 thousand 900 at the Charndwip sub-post office.

Following a departmental investigation that substantiated the embezzlement allegations totaling Taka 15 lakh 83 thousand 900, a case was registered at the Boalkhali Police Station on July 14, 2016.

Subsequently, after the ACC's investigation, a charge-sheet was submitted to the court on May 30, 2017, and the trial began.
