Container vessel meets with accident in Ctg port channel

CHATTOGRAM, August 3, 2026 (BSS) - A container ship has encountered an accident due to a mechanical failure in its steering while navigating the waterway channel of Chattogram port here today.

Two tugboats are currently engaged in efforts to safely relocate the ship, said Port Secretary Syed Refaet Hamim.

So far, no casualties have been reported as a result of the incident. 

According to the port sources, the container ship, identified as MV CNC Uranus, unexpectedly lost control when its steering malfunctioned while traversing the channel.  

At one point, the vessel collided with Red Buoy No. 2 and became lodged against the retaining wall. Syed Refaet Hamim said that the rescue and removal operation commenced immediately following the incident.  

The tugboats Kandari-4 and Kandari-11 have been assigned to the operation. The tugboats are working diligently to safely maneuver the two vessels. In addition to the port authorities, personnel from the Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Coast Guard are collaborating at the scene.

 All relevant agencies are vigilantly monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of the ship and to uphold normal navigation within the waterway.
