Modern multi-storey complex planned for Rupsha New Market: KDA Chairman

KHULNA, Aug 2, 2026 (BSS) - Khulna Development Authority (KDA) Chairman Advocate SM Shafiqul Alam Mona today said Rupsha New Market is not only one of Khulna city's key commercial hubs but also a promising economic centre for the region, serving thousands of shoppers every day.

He said the KDA has undertaken a multi-dimensional plan to modernise the market, sustain business activities and ensure a safer and more convenient environment for traders and customers alike.

"The KDA is working for planned urban development and commercial expansion in the Khulna region, particularly in the metropolitan area, following the directives of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman," he added.

Mona made the remarks while exchanging views with leaders of the KDA Rupsha New Market Shop Owners' Association, the Khulna Shrimp Traders' Association and other businessmen at the KDA conference room today.

He said the authority has taken up a project to transform Rupsha New Market into a modern, clean and business-friendly commercial centre.

As part of the initiative, a detailed plan will soon be finalised for constructing a multi-storey commercial complex aimed at improving the market environment and making it more attractive to buyers and traders.

The KDA chairman also warned that drives would be conducted against illegal structures and encroachments to preserve the city's beauty and reduce public inconvenience.

He urged traders to refrain from occupying footpaths, KDA land or other public and private properties illegally for business purposes.

KDA members Md. Iqbal Hossain and Ruhul Amin Kutubuddin Ahmad, Chief Engineer Kazi Sabirul Alam, Director Dr. Zakia Sultana, General Secretary of the KDA Rupsha New Market Shop Owners' Association SM Nurul Alam Dipu, President of the Khulna Shrimp Traders' Association SM Nuruzzaman Biplob and its General Secretary Md. Wahiduzzaman Manjir, among others, spoke at the meeting.
