BAGERHAT, Aug 1, 2026 (BSS) - A construction worker was killed and another injured after the wall of an under-construction septic tank collapsed at a madrasa in Morelganj upazila of Bagerhat this afternoon.

The accident occurred at the premises of Gulishakhali Fazil Madrasa near Gulishakhali Bazar, where workers were constructing a septic tank.

According to police, fire service and local sources, a section of the septic tank wall suddenly gave way, trapping two workers under the debris.

Local residents began rescue efforts before personnel from Morelganj Fire Service and Civil Defence arrived at the scene and joined the operation. After about an hour, Atiar Rahman, 35, was recovered dead, while injured worker Nayan was rescued and taken to a hospital for treatment.

Morelganj Fire Service and Civil Defence Team Leader Md Golam Faruk said the rescue team responded after receiving a call through the national emergency service 999. He said continuous rain and a large crowd at the site hampered the operation.

The deceased, Atiar Rahman, was the son of Badrul Alam and hailed from Agrail village in Jessore district.

Morelganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mahmudur Rahman said legal formalities were underway and an investigation had been launched to determine the cause of the accident.
