RAJSHAHI, July 3, 2026 (BSS) – A 'Run for Padma' mini marathon was held in Rajshahi today to raise awareness about protecting the historic Padma River and other rivers across the country, restoring navigability, preventing river encroachment and pollution, and ensuring Bangladesh's fair share of water from trans-boundary rivers.

The 7.5-kilometre mini marathon was inaugurated at the city's Lalon Shah Open Stage by Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Administrator Mahfuzur Rahman Riton.

Addressing the event as the chief guest, Riton said the 'Run for Padma' mini marathon is a powerful social movement aimed at raising public awareness about river conservation.

"I believe our collective awareness, sense of responsibility and initiatives can protect the Padma and all other rivers of the country. Let us all come forward to safeguard our rivers and leave a healthy, safe and vibrant river system for future generations," he said.

The RCC administrator also extended his greetings to the participants and thanked the organisers for arranging the event.

The marathon started from the Lalon Shah Open Stage, reached Food Office Mor before turning back, and finished at the starting point. Around 550 runners of different age groups took part in the event, including about 135 women.

Among others, Liaquat Ali, adviser to the 'Run for Padma' mini marathon and editor of the Sonali Sangbad, and Golam Mostafa Mamun, adviser to the organisation and general secretary of the Rajshahi Press Club, were present at the inaugural ceremony.

The organisers said the 'Run for Padma' is not merely a Rajshahi-based event but a movement linked to the country's rivers, environment and the future of coming generations.

They said the initiative was taken to raise public awareness about the need to save the historic Padma River and all other rivers across the country.
