Rampal shop shut after 12 students fall ill from suspected food poisoning

BAGERHAT, June 30, 2026 (BSS) - A mobile court in Rampal upazila of Bagerhat today shut down a shop after 12 primary school students and a guardian fell ill from suspected food poisoning after eating chips allegedly sold from the outlet.

Rampal Upazila Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate Tamanna Ferdousi led the mobile court at the shop beside Dakshinpara Government Primary School in Bara Durgapur village following the incident.

During the raid, the magistrate found expired chips and products packaged in wrappers resembling detergent packets. The shop was immediately closed.

The incident occurred around 12:30 pm on Monday when the students bought and ate the chips from the shop. Soon afterward, they developed symptoms including stomach pain, vomiting and physical discomfort.

Local residents rushed the affected students and a guardian to Maitree Hospital at Rampal Thermal Power Station for treatment.

According to hospital authorities, 13 people, including 12 students and one guardian, were admitted with suspected food poisoning. One student in critical condition was referred to Rampal Upazila Health Complex for advanced treatment, while the remaining patients are receiving treatment at Maitree Hospital.

Medical Officer Dr. Sakib Rezwan said the condition of the patients at Maitree Hospital is stable and they are recovering.

Following the incident, local BNP leaders visited the hospital and spoke with the affected students and their guardians.

State Minister for Forests, Environment and Climate Change Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam also contacted the hospital authorities and directed them to ensure necessary treatment for the patients.
