BMDA launches tree plantation to mitigate adverse effects of climate change

RAJSHAHI, June 27, 2026 (BSS)- Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) has inaugurated its tree plantation activities as part of the 
successful implementation of the Prime Minister's announced programme to plant 25 crore trees across the country in five years.
 
The programme was inaugurated by Chairman of BMDA Hasan Zafir Tuhin today on the grounds of its head office.
 
The tree plantation programme was chaired by Abu Sayeed Kamruzzaman, Executive Director of BMDA.
 
In his speech, Hasan Zafir Tuhin said there is no alternative to tree planting for maintaining ecological balance, tackling the adverse effects of 
climate change, and building a green and livable Bangladesh for future generations. 
 
The initiative taken by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is very timely. He emphasized not only planting trees but also ensuring proper care and preservation of the planted saplings, he noted.
 
The Chairman further said that tree plantation in the Barind region will play an important role in preventing soil erosion, conserving biodiversity, helping recharge groundwater, and maintaining environmental stability. 
 
He called on all BMDA officials and staff, as well as the general public, to actively participate in the tree plantation programme.
 
Abul Kasem, additional chief engineer of BMDA, and its Superintending Engineers Nazirul Islam, Abdul Latif, Mahfuzur Rahman, Jinnurain Khan, Shibir Ahmed, and Md. Shamsher Ali were present at the event.
 
Executive Engineers Enamul Kader, Mostafizur Rahman, along with officials and employees from various levels, local dignitaries, and stakeholders also attended.
 
As part of the programme, saplings of various species of fruit, forest, and medicinal trees were planted.
 
The BMDA will plant about three crore trees over the next two years across different zones and regions in 16 districts of Rajshahi and Rangpur 
Divisions.
 
The organisation will continue to conduct tree planting and maintenance activities in various areas to implement the government's announced 5-year programme to plant 25 crore trees.
