BAGERHAT, June 22, 2026 (BSS) - Authorities today removed an illegal embankment built across a government canal in Rampal upazila, restoring the natural flow of water and bringing relief to local farmers.
The embankment on the Chamarkhali Canal in Singarbunia village was dismantled around 11:00 am under the supervision of Rampal Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Abhijit Chakraborty, following instructions from State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Sheikh Faridul Islam.
According to local residents, a group of individuals erected the embankment about three months ago, obstructing the canal's normal water flow and subsequently using the area for fish farming.
The matter was brought to the attention of the state minister by local BNP leader Md Mohidul Islam on behalf of villagers, prompting directives for immediate action.
Acting on the order, the executive magistrate, accompanied by police personnel and local residents, oversaw the removal of the embankment.
Speaking at the site, Chakraborty warned that legal action would be taken against anyone attempting to obstruct government-recorded canals in the future. He said the government remains committed to protecting rivers and canals to preserve the environment and maintain natural water flow.
Local social worker and journalist Sabur Rana said the removal of the embankment has renewed hopes among farmers for better agricultural production, as the restored water flow is expected to benefit the cultivation of paddy, vegetables and various fruits in the area.
