PATUAKHALI, June 22, 2026 (BSS) - A five-year-old boy tragically drowned in a pond while visiting his maternal grandparents' home in Bauphal upazila of the district on Monday morning.

The deceased was identified as Osman Gani, 5, son of Jewel Hawlader, a resident of Ramnagar village under Ward No-7 of Suryamoni union in the upazila.

Family members said that Osman went missing on Sunday afternoon. Despite extensive searches by relatives and local residents, no trace of him could be found.

Nearly a day after his disappearance, locals spotted the child's body floating in a pond adjacent to his grandparents' residence near the Kalaiya New Union Parishad area around 6 am on Monday. Police later recovered the body from the pond.

Confirming the incident, Bauphal Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Sirajul Islam said police recovered the child's body and necessary legal procedures will be taken following the investigation.
