Rangpur farmers rejoice as groundnut prices hit record high amid bumper harvest

RANGPUR, June 19, 2026 (BSS) - Farmers are very happy in Rangpur agricultural region after getting a bumper production of groundnut during the last 2025-2026 Rabi season and its all-time high prices in local markets.
 
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and market sources, farmers are now selling their groundnuts to wholesalers at an all-time high price of 6,400 to Taka 7,000 per mound (40 kg) and making huge profits.
 
"Groundnut farmers are earning an average profit of up to Taka 1,00,000 by producing 25 to 30 mounds of groundnut per acre of land excluding farming costs of Taka 50,000 per acre," groundnut trader at Rangpur City Market Md Mokhlesur Rahman told BSS .
 
Last year, farmers sold their newly harvested groundnut at rates between Taka 3,500 and Taka 4,000 per mound at this period of the season.
 
Due to the ever-increasing demand in the country's growing food industry, low cultivation costs, and excellent market prices, the people of the Char and ordinary farmers in this region are benefiting immensely from cultivating groundnut.
 
The DAE had fixed a target of producing 12,245 tonnes of groundnut from 5,736 hectares of land for all five districts of Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari in the region during the last 2025-2026 Rabi season.
 
"Enthusiastic farmers, however, finally cultivated groundnut in 5,748 hectares of land, exceeding the set farming target by 12 hectares of land or 0.21 percent" Deputy Director of the DAE's Rangpur region Agriculturist Md Shirajul Islam said.
 
After completing harvest, farmers have produced 12,001 tonnes of groundnut at the average yield rate of 2.09 tonnes per hectare in this region during the last 2025-2026 Rabi season.
 
Farmers are getting bumper groundnut yields with pleasing prices following expanded cultivation of its high yielding varieties evolved by Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) on the main lands and riverine char areas.
 
Talking to BSS, farmers Harun Ur Rashid, Nur Mohammad and Abdur Rahman of village Char Biswanath in Kawnia upazila of Rangpur said they cultivated groundnut in one acres of char land on the Teesta riverbed.
 
"After completing harvest last month, we got 26 mounds to 28 mounds of groundnut each and sold the crop at Taka 6,400 per mound to reap a huge profit excluding the farming costs," Abdur Rahman said.
 
Farmer Saidul Islam of Char Gorokmandal village in Phulbari upazila of Kurigram said he cultivated groundnut on two acres of char land on the Dharla riverbed.
 
"I got a super bumper production of groundnut after completing harvest and earned a net profit of Taka two-lakh excluding all related costs for farming and harvesting of the crop," said Islam.
 
Farmer couple Aminul Islam and Ummey Kulsum of village Char Taluk Shahbaz on the Teesta riverbed in Kawnia upazila of Rangpur said they had cultivated groundnut on two acres of sandy char lands.
 
"After harvesting, we got a total production of 52 mounds of groundnut during the last Rabi season," Aminul Islam said, and earned an all-time high net profit of about Taka two lakh excluding production costs.
 
Farmer Atiar Rahman of Char Gonai village in the same upazila said he had cultivated groundnuts on 1.5 acres of sandy char of land on the Teesta riverbeds, spending Taka 70,000 during the last Rabi season.
 
"I got a bumper production of 42 mounds of groundnut and earned excellent profits this time," Rahman added.
