CHATTOGRAM, June 16, 2026 (BSS): Dr. Md. Ziauddin, Divisional Commissioner of Chattogram, today said that diseases related to tobacco, premature mortality, and economic losses pose significant challenges for the nation's populace.
Despite the existence of a tobacco control law aimed at creating a tobacco-free society, effective implementation necessitates a collaborative effort from the administration, educational institutions, media, social organizations, and the general public.
He made these remarks while addressing as the chief guest at the divisional anti-tobacco seminar titled "To be done in the implementation of the Smoking and Tobacco Use (Control) Act," which was organized by the Divisional Commissioner’s Office at the Chattogram Circuit House Conference Room today.
Under the theme "Break the mask, quit addiction, build a tobacco-nicotine-free life," the Commissioner emphasized that the government is persistently working towards tobacco control. Nevertheless, for the law to be effectively implemented, it is crucial to foster social awareness, uphold the rule of law, and create alternative economic opportunities.
Dr Md. Ziauddin emphasized the necessity for rigorous oversight regarding the issue, expressing concern over the increasing prevalence of tobacco use among students in schools and colleges.
He remarked that the current administration is prioritizing the growth and enhancement of sports initiatives to divert the youth from the detrimental impacts of tobacco and drug dependency.
The government asserts that engaging in sports not only promotes physical health but also significantly contributes to the cultivation of discipline, leadership qualities, self-confidence, and a constructive outlook on life among young individuals.
The function was chaired by Additional Divisional Commissioner Md. Motahar Hossain, while Chattogram Divisional Director (Health) Sheikh Fazle Rabbi delivered the keynote presentation on the adverse effects of tobacco and relevant law issues.
Special guests included Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Miah and Civil Surgeon Dr. Jahangir Alam, who also addressed the audience.
Earlier, a rally titled "What to do to implement the Smoking and Tobacco Use Act" commenced from the Circuit House grounds, paraded Kazir Dewri intersection, and culminated at the Circuit House.
