MUNSHIGANJ, June 15, 2026 (BSS) - Munshiganj has exceeded its Boro cultivation target by 238 hectares this season, with farmers bringing 24,617 hectares of land under the crop and achieving a bumper harvest due to favourable weather conditions and the absence of natural calamities.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), the average yield reached nearly five metric tons per hectare, while the district's production target was set at 104,022 metric tons.
The cultivated areas included 1,078 hectares in Sadar upazila, 2,517 hectares in Tongibari, 3,167 hectares in Louhajang, 5,295 hectares in Sirajdikhan, 2,504 hectares in Gazaria, and 10,056 hectares in Srinagar. The production target for the season was set at 104,022 metric tons.
Farmers attributed the higher yield to favorable weather conditions.
Jamal Molla, a farmer from Haridia village in Louhajang upazila, told BSS that the paddy crop suffered no significant damage due to the absence of storms and heavy rainfall.
He said this year's production was better than in previous years and urged the government to purchase paddy directly from farmers at the field level.
Deputy Director of DAE Agriculturist Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman said the bumper harvest was mainly the result of favorable weather and the lack of natural calamities, allowing farmers to harvest their mature crops without disruption.
He also said that under the Agricultural Incentive Programme (GEO-280), the department distributed free high-quality seeds and fertilizers to 4,000 small and marginal farmers to encourage the cultivation of hybrid Boro paddy.
In addition, 321 demonstration plots were established across the district under various initiatives, including the Dhaka Region Agricultural Development Project, Partner Project, Revenue Project, and Oilseed Crop Development Project, to promote high-yield rice varieties and balanced fertilizer use among farmers.
