RANGPUR, June 12, 2026 (BSS) - A farmer was killed and his companion seriously injured in a lightning strike in Ghirnoi Maltola village of Lohani Para union in Badarganj upazila of the district this afternoon.
 
"The deceased farmer has been identified as Rahamat Ullah, 35, a resident of the village," said Badarganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hasan Zahid Sarkar. 
 
His injured companion Khorshed Alam, 40, is undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RpMCH). 
 
According to police and local sources, Rahamat Ullah and Khorshed Alam were working in the crop field with a few other farmers. 
 
When heavy rain started in the afternoon, they took shelter in a nearby irrigation house. 
 
Then, another strong lightning strike killed Rahamat Ullah on the spot. Farmer Khorshed Alam was seriously injured.
 
"The police reached the spot after receiving the news of the incident. The injured have been admitted to RpMCH," the OC added.
