ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY, Kushtia, April 2, 2026 (BSS) - Students of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia today staged a protest demanding justice for the murder of Assistant Professor Asma Sadia Runa.

Demonstrators along with victims’ family members blocked the Kushtia highway for an hour and later laid siege to the Superintendent of Police (SP) office in Kushtia.

The protest began at Mojompur Gate around 10:00 AM, with participants calling for the immediate arrest and trial of all accused. They expressed frustration over the failure to detain key suspects, alleging a culture of impunity and lack of security.

Runa’s husband, Imtiaz Sultan, claimed his wife was the victim of a conspiracy and accused several individuals of their involvement, including allegations of financial irregularities within the department.

After the demonstration, student representatives met Additional SP Shawkat Mohammad Hasan Imam, who assured them that further investigation, including remand of the prime accused, would uncover the full details of the case.

Students also warned of further protests, including a possible siege of the Vice-Chancellor’s office, citing a lack of cooperation from the university administration.
Runa was killed on March 4 in a stabbing incident involving a university employee. The prime accused, Fazlur Rahman, is currently in custody, while other named suspects remain at large.
