NETROKONA, March 9, 2026 (BSS) - The excavation work of the historic Tilakkhali Canal, associated with the memory of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, was inaugurated today in Sadar upazila of the district.
The inauguration ceremony was held at 11:00 am on Monday at the Krishnakhali area of Medni union in Sadar upazila. The event was organised by the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
Member of Parliament for the Netrokona-2 (Sadar-Barhatta) constituency Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Haque attended the function as the chief guest and formally inaugurated the excavation work.
According to LGED sources, the 4,020-meter-long historic canal is being re-excavated at a cost of Taka 1 crore 36 lakh 86 thousand under the nationwide "Pond and Canal Development (2nd Revised) Project".
A discussion meeting was also held marking the inauguration. The meeting was chaired by Sadar Upazila BNP President Md. Mojibur Rahman Khan and moderated by General Secretary Taj Uddin Faras Sentur.
Lawmaker Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Haque delivered the keynote address at the event.
Among others present at the function were LGED Executive Engineer Wahiduzzaman, former district BNP president Advocate Nuruzzaman Nuru, former general secretary and GP Advocate Mahfuzul Haque, former organising secretary SM Shafiqul Quader Shuja, former district BNP joint convener Bazlur Rahman Pathan, Moniruzzaman Dudu and former municipal BNP general secretary Gazi Tofail Hossain.
Speaking on the occasion, LGED Executive Engineer Wahiduzzaman said the excavation work of the historic Tilakkhali Canal is expected to be completed within this year.
The re-excavation of the canal will help ensure uninterrupted irrigation facilities for nearby agricultural lands and remove long-standing waterlogging problems in the area, he added.
