National Jute Day observed in Rangpur

RANGPUR, March 6, 2026 (BSS) - The National Jute Day- 2026 was observed in Rangpur city with the theme 'Develop the jute industry, create employment' and various programmes today. 
 
The Rangpur district administration and the Department of Jute jointly organized the programmes including a colorful rally and discussion. 
 
Rangpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Enamul Ahsan attended the post-rally discussion held at his conference room as the chief guest. 
 
Rangpur Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Ramiz Alam presided over the event. 
 
In his speech, the Deputy Commissioner said that the importance of jute in Bangladesh is immense in terms of agriculture, industry and economy. 
 
Last year, jute was cultivated on about 8,085 hectares of land in the Rangpur region where about 3,500 farmers are directly associated with jute cultivation and earning a living. 
 
"The future of this industry and the livelihood of jute farmers largely depend on the demand for jute in the market," he said. 
 
He said that to increase the interest of farmers in jute cultivation and increase production, the government provides free high-quality jute seeds and fertilizers, training of farmers and necessary agricultural assistance to the registered farmers as incentives. 
 
He said, "A major problem in jute processing is the lack of adequate water bodies. The government is taking various initiatives to solve this problem." 
 
The Deputy Commissioner said that the use of jute products in our daily lives must be made a habit. Polythene is not only harmful to the environment but also to human health. 
 
"Therefore, in the interest of protecting the environment and sustainable development, the use of jute products instead of polythene and its multi-purpose use must be increased," he said. 
 
He also called on all concerned to increase awareness among farmers, businessmen, entrepreneurs and the general public about the proper use and benefits of jute. 
 
The Additional District Commissioner, in his closing remarks, said that the jute industry will make an important contribution in creating employment opportunities.
 
"For this, the use of environmentally friendly jute products should be increased to bring back the glory of the golden fiber of jute. This will reduce environmental pollution and accelerate the country's economic development," he said.
 
Principal Scientific Officer of the Rangpur regional office of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute Dr Md Rishad Abdullah, Deputy Director of Rangpur Regional Sericulture Extension Office Md Mahbub-ul-Haq, Rangpur Regional Additional Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension Md Saiful Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Sarkar, Rangpur Regional Assistant Director and Chief Inspector of the Department of Jute Tarana Afroz Sajni, Assistant Director of National Consumers Rights Protection Department, Rangpur Md Mostafizur Rahman were present as special guests at the event. 
 
Government officials, jute farmers, jute traders and journalists were present at the programmes. 
 
Before the discussion, a colorful rally started from the Deputy Commissioner's office premises to mark the day, circled the main roads of the city and ended at the same place.
