KHULNA, Mar 2, 2026 (BSS) - Lawmaker of Khulna-4 constituency Azizul Bari Helal today said that canal excavation initiatives could significantly enhance the country's agricultural potential.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Kamargati canal excavation at Barakpur Union under Dighalia upazila, Helal recalled that BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahmanhad achieved food self-sufficiency by promoting agricultural development through canal excavation programs.

He said the ongoing re-excavation of canals in the area would improve irrigation facilities, ensure better water management and further strengthen agricultural production.

Later, the lawmaker inaugurated a protective embankment project on the Atrai River under the Disaster Risk Management Extension Project.

Among others present at the event were Dighalia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Harunur Rashid, Executive Engineer of the Water Development Board Ujjal Kumar Sen, Dighalia Upazila BNP President Saifur Rahman Mintu, General Secretary Abdur Rakib Mallik and local BNP leaders.
