200 vulnerable families get 'IGA' assistance in Gangachara

 RANGPUR, Feb 3, 2026 (BSS) - NGO Forum for Public Health on Monday provided 'Income Generating Activities (IGA)' assistance to 200 climate-vulnerable poor families in Gangachara upazila of Rangpur to establish and sustain model farms.
 
This assistance was distributed in a ceremony held at Laksmitari union parishad office premises in the upazila as part of the Adaptation Initiative for Climate-Vulnerable Offshore Small Islands and Riverine Charland in Bangladesh (2024-2029) project.
 
The project, funded by UNDP and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, is being implemented in climate-vulnerable offshore small islands and riverine charland to boost climate resilience for vulnerable communities under adverse situations.
 
Each of the beneficiary families received 20 indigenous chickens, a chicken house, 50 kg of feed and water pots as assistance to establish model family chicken farms and generate incomes on their way to improve their livelihoods and living standard. 
 
With Laksmitari union parishad chairman Abdullah Al Hadi in the chair, Gangachara Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Md Mahfuzar Rahman ateded the function as the chief guest.
 
UNDP Livelihood Associate Tonu Majumder and NGO Forum Technical Officer Md Mahmud Kabir, Admin and Finance Officer Kamruzzaman, Field Facilitator Mashiur Rahman and Jahangir Alam were present at the event. 
 
Talking to BSS after getting the IGA assistance, beneficiary Julekha Begum of Laksmitari village said, "We will try to become self-sufficient with the chickens that we received." 
 
Mokleshur Rahman of Anur Bazar West Sarkartari village said, "The NGO Forum for Public Health has given us chickens, houses, food with UNDP assistance so that we can become self-sufficient." 
 
UNDP Associate Tonu Majumder said, "We distributed the assistance among the beneficiary families after providing them necessary training and equipment. We hope that through this, they will achieve their development." 
 
Laksmitari union parishad chairman Abdullah Al Hadi said, "I think that NGO Forum for Public Health distributed local species of indigenous chickens among the poor people to help in changing their fortunes."
 
The chief guest said that the chickens, chicken houses, chicken feed and water pots have been provided to the poor families so that they could meet their family nutritional needs and become self-sufficient by selling chickens and eggs in excess of their needs. 
 
"We are very much hopeful that this assistance will change the lives and livelihoods of the beneficiary families of the river-erosion-prone Laksmitari union of Gangachara upazila of Rangpur," he added.
