Rangpur-1 candidates face voters, pledge change and development

RANGPUR, Jan 31, 2026 (BSS) - All five candidates contesting the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections in the Rangpur-1 constituency, comprising Gangachara Upazila and part of Rangpur city, today pledged to bring meaningful change to transform the backward region into one of peace and progress.

The candidates made the commitment at a "Face to Face" programme organized by Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJAN) at the Gangachara Government Model High School grounds, marking the Referendum and the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Held under the slogan "There is no position more important than a citizen of a state," the programme featured SHUJAN Gangachara Upazila President Principal Md Nurunnabi Rana, who read out the responsibility pledges of the participating parliamentary candidates.

All five candidates attended the event, responded to questions from voters and outlined their visions and promises by directly engaging with the people of the constituency. They presented plans to move Rangpur-1 forward by eliminating discrimination and corruption and accelerating development.

The programme was chaired by Principal Md Nurunnabi Rana and moderated by SHUJAN Rangpur District President Principal Fakhrul Anam Benzu. SHUJAN District General Secretary Nasima Amin and Gangachara Government Model High School Headmaster Md Abdul Akher Miah also spoke at the event.

BNP candidate Mukarram Hossain Sujan, contesting with the symbol 'Sheaf of Paddy', said that if elected, he would work to maintain communal harmony, play a strong role in implementing the Teesta Master Plan, create employment opportunities and accelerate overall development in the area.

Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Raihan Siraji, contesting with the symbol 'Scales', pledged to build a well-planned and clean Rangpur-1 constituency. He also promised initiatives to prevent bribery, corruption and crime, eliminate unemployment and promote grassroots-based economic development.

Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidate ATM Golam Mustafa, contesting with the symbol 'Hand Fan', said he would work for the desired development of the area alongside establishing a justice-based social system. He also pledged to ensure an environment free from attacks and politically motivated cases if elected.

Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist) candidate Ahsanul Arefin, contesting with the symbol 'Scissors', and Islamic Front candidate Md Anas, contesting with the symbol 'Chair', also pledged to take Rangpur-1 forward through a non-discriminatory state system by ensuring accountability, reforms, justice and good governance.

Leaders and members of SHUJAN's district and upazila committees, leaders, activists and supporters of the contesting candidates, as well as local voters, were present at the programme.

According to District Election Office sources, Rangpur-1 constituency, surrounded by the Teesta River, has a total of 375,227 voters. Of them, 188,831 are male, 186,392 are female and two are transgender voters.
