JAMALPUR, Jan 28, 2026 (BSS) - Campaigning has gained momentum in Jamalpur-4 (Sarishabari) constituency as candidates intensify their electioneering ahead of the upcoming national election.
Six candidates from six political parties are contesting the seat. They are Md Faridul Kabir Talukdar Shamim of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Mohammad Abdul Awal of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Md Ali Akbar of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Md Ikbal Hossain of Gano Odhikar Parishad, Md Kabir Hassan of Nagorik Oikya, and Mahbub Zaman Jweel of Bangladesh Communist Party.
BNP candidate Md Faridul Kabir Talukdar Shamim is actively campaigning across the constituency, pledging overall development in the education, health, communication and employment sectors if elected.
Shamim, also president of the district BNP, said his party aims to build a corruption- and terrorism-free society and is conducting its campaign in full compliance with the Election Commission's code of conduct.
He added that BNP respects electoral rules and that party leaders and activists have been instructed to strictly follow all guidelines.
Referring to the July Charter, he said BNP has approved it and is campaigning in favour of a 'Yes' vote in the upcoming referendum.
Expressing hope for a peaceful, impartial, credible and acceptable election, Shamim said the previous autocratic government had damaged the electoral system and stressed the need to restore democracy through a free and fair election.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate and secretary of the district Jamaat Advocate Mohammad Abdul Awal is campaigning with a set of electoral pledges, placing priority on employment-oriented programmes for unemployed youths. He said initiatives would be taken to create job opportunities for educated youths.
Highlighting the constituency's vulnerability to flooding due to its proximity to a river, Abdul Awal said he plans to take pragmatic measures to protect the upazila from flood damage.
He also pledged to ensure fair prices for farmers' produce, reduce agricultural input costs, provide subsidies and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply for farmers.
Abdul Awal alleged that corruption has taken place in the distribution of government allowances, including old-age, widow and maternity allowances, depriving many eligible beneficiaries. He said steps would be taken to ensure allowances reach the deprived and deserving people.
On the electoral code of conduct, Abdul Awal, said party leaders and activists have been instructed to strictly follow Election Commission rules, adding that no violations have occurred so far.
Regarding the July Charter, he said Jamaat leaders and activists are campaigning in its favour and distributing leaflets seeking a 'Yes' vote alongside election campaigns. He also urged the Election Commission to take necessary measures to ensure a free, fair, peaceful and violence-free election.
According to the Election Office, the Jamalpur-4 constituency has a total of 301,045 voters, including 149,228 men, 151,816 women and one transgender voter. Voters will cast their ballots at 553 polling booths in 88 centres on February 12.
