NETROKONA, Jan 21, 2026 (BSS) - A total of 25 candidates will contest the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections in five parliamentary constituencies of the district, following the withdrawal of three candidates on the final day for withdrawal of candidacy.
Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md Enamul Haque and Islami Oikya Jote candidate Md Sharif Uddin Talukder withdrew their nomination papers from the Netrokona-2 (Sadar-Barhatta) constituency. Meanwhile, independent candidate Tahmina Zaman, wife of former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfuzzaman Babar, withdrew her nomination from Netrokona-4 (Madan, Mohanganj, Khaliajuri).
District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Md Saifur Rahman confirmed the information on Tuesday night.
Earlier, 42 candidates purchased nomination papers for the five constituencies, of which 30 submitted nominations papers. After scrutiny, six candidates were disqualified, while four later regained their candidacy through appeal verdicts of the Election Commission. With the withdrawal of three candidates on the final day, the number of contestants now stands at 25.
In Netrokona-1, six candidates will contest. They are BNP nominee Barrister Kaiser Kamal, Jatiya Party's Md Anwar Hossain Khan, Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Md Abdul Mannan (Sohag), Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis's Golam Rabbani, Communist Party's Md Alkas Uddin Mir, and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal's Md Belal Hossain, who was reinstated following an appeal.
Five candidates have been finalized for Netrokona-2. They include BNP nominee Professor Dr Md Anwarul Haque, Jatiya Party's ABM Rafiqul Haque Talukder, Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Abdul Qayyum, Jatiya Nagorik Party's Fahim Rahman Khan Pathan, and Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan's Abdur Rahim, who regained candidacy through appeal.
All six candidates remain in the race in Netrokona-3. They are BNP's Rafiqul Islam Hilali, independent (BNP rebel) Md Delwar Hossain Bhuiyan, Jamaat-e-Islami's Md Khairul Kabir Niyogi, Jatiya Party's Md Abul Hossain Talukder, Islamic Front Bangladesh's Md Shamsuddoha, and Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Md Zakir Hossain.
In Netrokona-4, five candidates will contest. They are BNP's Md Lutfuzzaman Babar, Jamaat-e-Islami's Md Al Helal Talukder, Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Md Mukhlesur Rahman, Communist Party's Jolly Talukder, and Bangladesh Revolutionary Workers Party's Champa Rani Sarkar, who was reinstated through appeal.
Meanwhile, Netrokona-5 (Purbadhola) will see three candidates in the fray: BNP's Md Abu Taher Talukder, Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Md Nurul Islam, and Jamaat-e-Islami's Masum Mustafa, all of whom were reinstated by the Election Commission following appeal verdicts.
