Rohingya Camp fire brought under control in Cox’s Bazar

COX’S BAZAR, Jan 20, 2026 (BSS) - A fire that broke out at a Rohingya camp in Ukhia upazila of the district early Tuesday was brought under control after several hours.

The fire started around 3:00am at Camp No. 16 in the Shafiullah Kata area of Palangkhali union. According to local residents and fire service officials, the blaze originated at a BRAC-run learning centre in the D-4 block of the camp and quickly spread to nearby shelters and sheds.

As the fire erupted late at night, panic spread among camp residents, forcing many to flee their homes and take shelter in safer locations to save their lives.

Confirming the incident, Ukhia Fire Service and Civil Defence Station Officer Dollar Tripura said two fire service units rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the alert. “After intensive efforts, the fire was brought under control by 7:00am,” he said, adding that preliminary estimates suggest between 400 and 500 houses were gutted.

The exact extent of the damage and whether there were any casualties could not be confirmed immediately.
