CUMILLA, Jan 20, 2026 (BSS) - Police arrested two youths along with a foreign-made pistol, two magazines and bullets after searching a passenger bus in Chandina upazila of the district last night.

The arrestees were identified as Habibur Rahman Shakil, 37, son of Babul Mia of Monairkandi village in Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj district, and Mohammad Chishti, 35, son of Golzar Hossain of Laxmankhola area under Bandar upazila of the same district.

Officer-in-Charge of Elliotganj Highway Police Station Ruhul Amin confirmed the matter on Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, a regular check post was set up by the police at Madhaiya bus station area on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. During the operation, a passenger bus named Asia Aircon, which was heading towards Dhaka from Cumilla, was stopped and searched. A foreign pistol, two magazines and bullets were recovered from the possession of the two youths.

During preliminary interrogation, police suspected that the accused were illegally collecting firearms through border areas and attempting to smuggle them to Dhaka.

OC Ruhul Amin said a detailed investigation is underway to identify the source and intended destination of the recovered weapons. Legal proceedings, including filing a case under relevant laws, are in progress.
