SUNAMGANJ, Dec 15, 2025 (BSS) - The repair and implementation of crop protection dams in the haor areas of Sunamganj district have been inaugurated under the KABITA policy for the financial year 2025-2026, aiming to safeguard boro crops across the region.
The inauguration programme was held on Monday morning at Kalna Haor in Sadar upazila, where Deputy Commissioner Dr Mohammad Ilias Mia formally launched the programme.
Under the initiative, repair and maintenance work on submerged dams in 137 haors will be carried out at a total cost of Taka 103 crore.
According to the Water Development Board (WDB), the project includes the construction and renovation of about 590 kilometres of crop protection dams across 12 upazilas of the district. The works will be implemented through 510 Project Implementation Committees (PICs).
Speaking after the inauguration, Deputy Commissioner Dr Mohammad Ilias Mia said that due to high water levels in several haor areas, it would not be possible to start dam work simultaneously everywhere.
"Work will begin in areas where the water level recedes first and will be completed on a priority basis," he said, adding that PIC presidents have been instructed to ensure the timely completion of the work.
Water Development Board Executive Engineer Mamun Hawlader, Additional District Administrator (General) Ayesha Akhter and Sunamganj Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sultana Jerin were present at the event.
Also attending were Rangarchar Union Parishad Chairman Abdul Hai, District Monitoring Committee member Muhammad Aminul Haque, and journalists from print and electronic media.
