CUMILLA, Dec 14, 2025 (BSS) - The National Consumer Rights Protection Department on Sunday fined Taka 50,000 on a bakery factory in Cumilla city for multiple violations of consumer rights and food safety regulations.

The fine was imposed on Arab Bakery, located in the Pathuria area of the city, following a raid conducted from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm. The action was taken under various sections of the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009.

During the operation, authorities found that the bakery was selling underweight products, providing about 70 grams less for every two pounds of party cake. The inspection team also detected the use of prohibited food colours in baby food, frying baby food in burnt oil, and preparing and storing food in an unhygienic environment.

Several pieces of evidence related to hygiene violations were seized during the raid.

The operation was led by Md. Kausar Mia, assistant director of the Consumer Rights Protection Department, Cumilla. Md. Shakib, a sample collector from the Bangladesh Safe Food Authority, was present during the raid while members of the Cumilla District Police provided overall support to the mobile court team in the meantime.

Speaking to reporters, Md. Kausar Mia said that along with the fine, the bakery was issued a strict warning for future compliance. Such drives would continue in the public interest, and legal action would be taken against anyone found violating food safety standards and consumer rights, he added.
