MYMENSINGH, Dec 14, 2025 (BSS) - A five-storey building tilted in Mymensingh city during piling work for a nearby 20-storey building, triggering panic among the building's owner and tenants. For safety reasons, they vacated the building overnight.

The incident occurred on Saturday night in the Gulkibari area of the city.

At around 9:30 pm, a visit to the site found that construction of a 20-storey building was underway in the Kajibari area under the initiative of Greenland Developer Private Limited.

During the piling work, the adjacent five-storey building began to tilt. Cracks appeared on the front and side walls of the building, and soil erosion created gaps around it.

Upon receiving the information, members of the police and Fire Service rushed to the scene and inspected the situation. Considering the risk, they instructed the residents to evacuate the building immediately and directed the developer company to provide support by filling soil promptly to prevent further tilting.

Tenant Shila Rani said, "We were terrified when the building suddenly tilted. On the administration's instructions, we are leaving our home. We will return once the situation becomes normal."

Rafiqul Islam Liton, brother of the building owner, alleged, "The developer company has been carrying out construction work in an unplanned manner for a long time. As a result, our five-storey building has tilted. Large cracks have appeared on the front and sides. A major accident could happen at any time."

Kotwali Model Police Station ASI Lal Mia said, "Due to the piling work for the 20-storey building, a nearby five-storey building has tilted. Residents have been relocated in the interest of safety."

However, denying the allegation, Greenland Developer Private Limited engineer Abu Sayeed said, "The building did not tilt due to the piling work. It tilted for some other reason. Nevertheless, we are providing soil support as instructed by the administration."
