TANGAIL, Dec 2, 2025 (BSS) - Favorable weather and timely nursing from the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) have resulted in an excellent yield of Ropa Aman paddy in the district this season.

Officials said that the district has not only met but surpassed its cultivation target, bringing smiles to farmers who are now expecting a good market price for their produce.

Harvesting began early in the season and is progressing in phases across the district. According to the DAE, farmers have already harvested around 63 percent of the cultivated land. Harvesting activities are in full swing in rural areas, with farmers engaged in cutting, threshing, and processing the newly harvested paddy.

A field visit to Digor village in Kalihati upazila revealed a festive atmosphere, with farmers working enthusiastically in the fields. While combine harvesters are being used widely, nearly 80–85 percent of farmers are still harvesting manually to preserve quality straw. Freshly harvested paddy is already filling farmers’ yards.

The district’s season-long target for Aman paddy cultivation was 102,000 hectares, but farmers ultimately planted 104,583 hectares, thanks to government incentives and the distribution of high-yield seed varieties.

Farmers said that where they previously harvested 14–16 maunds per bigha, this year they expect 18–20 maunds, marking a significant increase.

However, some farmers mentioned losses caused by recent storms.

Abu Bakkar, a farmer from Dighar village, said "I cultivated aman on two bighas of land. Some of my crop was damaged, but I still expect 18–20 maunds."

Abdur Jabbar, another farmer, added that despite storm-related damage, he hopes to recover his investment due to the overall improved yield.

Laborers are also benefiting, earning higher wages during the peak harvesting period.

Agronomist Ashek Parvez, Deputy Director of the District Agricultural Extension Department, said the achievement was possible due to regular field-level consultations, training on modern cultivation techniques, improved seed management, and effective disease control.

He said that 62,750 hectares have already been harvested and threshing work is in progress. The district cultivated hybrid, Ufshi, and some local Aman varieties, all of which performed well due to low pest infestation.

The DAE expects that the entire Aman harvest in Tangail will be completed by the second week of December.
