Boro farming progressing fast in Khulna region

KHULNA, Jan 3, 2024 (BSS) - The farming of Boro paddy is progressing fast in four districts under the Khulna agricultural region during the current season amid much enthusiasm.
 
The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has set a target to bring a total of 2,57,020 hectares of land under Boro cultivation this year with the production target of 11,38,871 metric tonnes of clean rice, DAE sources said.
 
The farmers have already prepared seed beds on 13,791 hectares of land where the seedlings have grown well.
 
In Khulna district, farmers have already cultivated Boro paddy on 1,176 hectares of land against the cultivation target of 64,010 hectares of land with the production target of 2,90,471 tonnes of Boro rice.
 
In Bagerhat, 2,628 hectares of land have been cultivated against the farming target of 63,020 hectares of land with the production target of 2,88,753 tonnes of rice, in Satkhira, 558 hectares of land have been cultivated against the farming target of 79,820 hectares of land with the production target of 3,36,771 tonnes of rice and in Narail, 235 hectares of land have been cultivated against the farming target of 50,170 hectares of land with the production target of 2,22,876 tonnes of rice.
 
Mohan Kumar Ghosh, additional director of DAE, Khulna region said the weather is favourable and the cultivation is progressing fast to meet the target before the expected time. Seedlings have done well because of the mild winter.
 
Following the instructions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, not even an inch of land should be kept fallow, farmers are being instructed to cultivate all the fallow land. There is no irrigation crisis yet. Due to government incentives, farmers are getting interested in farming. 81,000 farmers have got Hybrid Boro seeds and 77,000 farmers have got High yielding Boro seeds free of cost, he said adding that farmers have come forward to Boro farming with enthusiasm.
 
To make Boro farming a grand success, necessary measures have been taken to supply fertilizers, insecticides and other agri-inputs to the farmers by ensuring power supply, said an official of DAE.
