Omarzai trumps Patwari to lead Sylhet to victory in BPL

DHAKA, Jan 1, 2026 (BSS)—Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai made an instant impact with a brilliant performance in his Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) debut as Sylhet Titans pulled off a six-run victory over Dhaka Capitals for their second victory in the tournament at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium today.

Omarzai firstly hammered a 24 ball-50 not out to steer Sylhet to a challenging 173-5 before taking 3-40 in his four overs to significantly damage Dhaka Capitals.

Shamim Patwari kept the side in the contest but despite his valiant 43 ball-81 not out, Dhaka fell short and managed to put up 167-8.

Requiring an improbable 27 runs for victory in the last over, Patwari put a brave face to hammer 20 runs in the first five balls of Mohammad Amir, leaving the equation for seven runs in the last ball. A six could have sent the game to the Super Over but Amir baffled Shamim to bowl a dot, ensuring Sylhet’s victory.

Put into bat first, Sylhet made a slow start with the top order including the captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz who promoted him to No.3, failed to come up with the terms.

Parvez Hossain Emon, however, hit 32 ball-44 to keep them relevant before Omarzai gave the impetus, steering the side to a challenging total. Omarzai’s knock included five fours and three sixes.

Omarzai then ripped through Dhaka batting line up, ably supported by left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed who took 2-26. Courtesy to their brilliant job, Dhaka were reduced to 43-5.

When a defeat looked imminent, Patwari stood tall against the adversities, hitting the bowlers all corner of the park to edge the side closer to an unlikely victory.

However, Mohammad Amir used his vast experience to deny Patwari and Dhaka at the end.

Sabbir Rahman with 23 and Usman Khan with 21 were the other two batters of Dhaka to reach double digits. Amir ended with 2-30 eventually.
