RAJSHAHI, Aug 12, 2026 (BSS)- The unspent Taka 1.80 crore from the Bairagir 
Khal re-excavation project in Parila Union of Paba upazila, Rajshahi has been 
returned to the government treasury.
 
Paba Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ibnul Abedin confirmed the information 
this morning.
 
He said the unspent money was returned to prevent wastage of government funds 
and to ensure transparency and accountability in project implementation.
 
Expenditure has been incurred only to the extent of the work completed. As 
the excavation work could not proceed within the stipulated time due to 
monsoon and heavy rainfall, the Paba Upazila Administration returned the 
unspent amount of the allocation to the government treasury without spending 
it."
 
He further said, "Every Taka of a government project is the people's money. 
So it is our responsibility to ensure its proper use. There is no 
justification for spending money allocated for work that could not be done 
due to rain."
 
According to sources in the Upazila administration, Taka 2.58 crore was 
allocated for the re-excavation of the 3.3-kilometer-long Bairagir Khal from 
Jalil's kiln to Faliar Beel in Parila Union, funded by the Ministry of 
Disaster Management and Relief.
 
Under the project, apart from re-excavating the canal, the drainage system 
was supposed to be improved.
 
Since the start of the project, about one kilometer of the canal has been re-
excavated, so far.
 
According to the Upazila administration's accounts, about 35 percent of the 
total specified length has been completed.
 
However, due to increased water in the canal caused by heavy rainfall during 
the monsoon season, it was not possible to continue excavation work in the 
remaining part.
 
According to the progress of work, Taka 1.80 crore remained unspent. Later, 
following the prescribed procedure, the amount was returned to the government 
treasury.
 
Upazila Project Implementation Officer Mahmudul Islam said Taka 2.58 crore 
was allocated for the re-excavation of the 3.3-km canal. 
Due to heavy rainfall, about 35 percent of the work has been completed, so 
far. Taka 1.80 crore remained unspent. The amount has been deposited to the 
government treasury through the prescribed process.
 
People concerned with the project said that the excavation work of the 
remaining part was hampered as the canal was filled with water during the 
monsoon season.
 
Initiatives will be taken to implement the rest of the project work once the 
situation becomes favorable.
 
Local residents said that after re-excavating about one kilometer of the 
canal, there has been a positive impact on water drainage.

The local people have started to get its benefits in this monsoon season 
itself. They expressed gratitude to the government for the initiative to re-
excavate the canal.
